The Kansas City Mavericks added an experienced forward to the squad for the upcoming season on Friday, signing Jordan Kwas to a contract after acquiring his playing rights last week from the Wheeling Nailers in exchange for defenseman Zach Tolkinen.
Kwas comes to the Mavericks after putting up career-high numbers in goals (20), assists (24), and points (44) for the Nailers and former Mav Jeff Christian, who is the head coach in Wheeling, in 58 games last season. Kwas broke into professional hockey with the Colorado Eagles back in the 2014-15 season after four seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The 5-10, 183lb forward was also a member of the 2016 Eastern Conference Champion team in Wheeling that eventually lost in the Kelly Cup Final to the Allen Americans.
While losing a solid defenseman like Tolkinen is never easy, the Mavericks have a wealth of depth on the blue line and could also be receiving additional defensemen from Calgary/Stockton which made a body on the back end expendable. Tolkinen was as steady as it gets for the Mavericks in both of his stints with the club, but acquiring a high-ceiling forward with good experience with a price tag. In the end, both teams made out well on their end of the deal.
Here is an updated look at the Mavericks roster heading into the preseason:
Forwards – Greg Betzold, Justin Breton, Rocco Carzo, Mark Cooper, Dan Correale, Carson Dubchak, Kwas, Shawn Pauly, Zach Stepan, Jared VanWormer
Defensemen – Patch Alber, Bryce Aneloski, Alex Brooks, Troy Donnay, Tyler Elbrecht, Tyler Palmer, Nate Widman
Goalies – Ty Rimmer
