FORT WAYNE, IN– In front of a hometown crowd of 5,739, the Komets took game one over the Mallards on Friday night.
The game got off to a pretty slow start with the teams seemingly just feeling each other out. Quad City got on the board first at 10:48 when Alex Petan opened the scoring when he got help from Grant Arnold and Josh MacDonald to take a 1-0 lead. Quad City stunned the crowd when Arnold scored on Fort Wayne’s Pat Nagle from 20-feet putting the Mallards up 2-0. Komets had many shots on goal but it was not until the period had a few seconds left when Komets team-MVP Mike Cazzola got some assist from Jason Binkley and Cody Sol to finally get Fort Wayne on the board. Quad City had 8 shots and Fort Wayne had 15 in the opening stanza.
Quad City came out firing in the second period when Michael Parks scored at 2:35 from the left circle to build the Mallards lead 3-1. Travis Ewanyk made his presence known when he scored at 13:22 to put Fort Wayne closer to tying the game. Shawn Szydlowski tied the game on a blast from 42 feet at 15:25 with help from Ryan Lowney and Cazzola. At the end of the second, period Fort Wayne had 17 shots and Quad City only had 2.
The only goal in the third period was when Gabriel Desjardins scored at 12:57 to give Fort Wayne the lead and the win.
Komets and Mallards will play Game two tonight at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The puck drops at 7:30 P.M.
