INDIANAPOLIS – The Indy Fuel announced Friday that they have signed forward Matt Johnson and defenseman Anthony Cortese for the upcoming season.
Johnson comes to Indy after playing his rookie season with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. In 43 games with the Swamp Rabbits, Johnson recorded six goals and 10 assists. Prior to making his professional debut, the 26-year-old forward played three seasons at Lake Superior State. In 93 games with the Lakers, Johnson tallied 18 points (4g, 14a).
Cortese signs with the Fuel after playing two seasons at Concordia University in Montreal. The 23-year-old defenseman played 55 games with the Stingers, recording 36 points (3g, 23a).
Prior to playing at Concordia, Cortese played a season for the Corpus Cristi Ice Rays (NAHL). While with the Ice Rays, the native of Pierrefonds, Quebec was the league’s top scoring defenseman after scoring 13 goals and 38 assists in 59 games. With the additions of Johnson and Cortese, Bernie John continues to build a two-way roster that will compete in the ECHL. Cortese, an offensive defenseman comes to Indy with plenty of skill to put up points. Johnson is a promising, two-way forward that is similar to the Rupert brothers.
