ESTERO, FL- The Florida Everblades earned two back-to-back preseason wins against the Orlando Solar Bears this weekend. The ‘Blades opened the preseason with a 4-1 victory over Orlando on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon closed out the preseason series with a 5-2 win.
“Overall we were extremely happy with the outcomes this weekend. We utilize the preseason as a tool to evaluate our new talent and get a read on players for future call-ups,” said associate head coach Tad O’Had. “We felt this was a great starting point. We felt very confident in our tandem of goaltenders, strength & size on the blue line and versatility with forwards.”
Defenseman Matt Finn scored two goals and earned the first star of the battle on Saturday, while Martin Ouellette made 23 saves for the ‘Blades. Forwards Paul Russell and Mitchell Heard also tallied goals against Orlando netminder Matt Hackett.
Finnish native Mike Vaskivuo notched the lone goal for Orlando.
“Strength on the blue line was a key for us,” said O’Had. “With the likes of newcomers Finn, Didier, Young, Seymour and Kanzig we have added a great deal of skill and size.”
Steven Lorentz, 6-3, 190-pounds, scored twice and added an assist during Sundays afternoon preseason wrap up. Paul Russell, Clark Seymour and Joe Cox also beat Orlando netminder Matt Hackett.
Todd Skirving and Vaskivuo netted goals on ‘Blades goaltender Callum Booth.
The ‘Blades will open their 20th anniversary season this weekend against the Atlanta Gladiators.
