SPRINGFIELD, MA –  It was a night to remember for Springfield Thunderbirds fans on Saturday as former Red Sox slugger “Big Papi” David Ortiz visited Springfield. Ortiz got a key to city of Springfield presented by Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno.

“Oh, he’s in so much trouble,” Ortiz said with a laugh. “Its an honor to be able to come here and the mayor is so nice. Its something I always appreciate and you never forget about it. Something you carry on for the rest of your life.”

Thunderbirds President Nathan Costa presented Ortiz with a one-day American Hockey League contract that he signed and even rode an ATV during the first intermission, something the Red Sox legend has but admits he never uses.

Ortiz told a group of reporters his first visit to Springfield was very good. He had been hearing about the atmosphere & town since it was first brought to him about coming here.

“Its a wonderful town and has a lot of good people. Its a town that has a lot of future,” Ortiz said. “This is a great organization and wonderful experience.”
