Fort Wayne, IN— In front of a hometown crowd of 8,457, the Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Wheeling Nailers 4 to 3.
Komets struck first at 1:07 into the first period when Travis Ewanyk got some help from Colin Mulvey and Mason Baptista and snuck the puck by the Nailers goalie Doug Carr. Wheeling retaliated when former Komet forward Garrett Meurs struck against Garrett Bartus. Assisting on Meurs goal was Michael Webster and Tyler Currier. The first and only penalty of the game happened when the Nailers Jordan Kwas got called for cross-checking.
The Komets kicked off the second period when Gabriel Desjardins was sent to the penalty box for tripping. Not long after Desjardins returned to the ice, Curtis Leonard was sent in for closing his hand on the puck. Then assisted by Adam Krause and Kevin Schulze, Cody Wydo scored to get the second period rolling for Wheeling. The Komets seemed to enjoy being in the penalty box in the second period when Trevor Cheek was sent for hooking and Will Weber was sent for roughing. To add insult to injury, Wheeling’s Gage Quinney, assisted by Schulze and Nick Sorkin, scored to bring the game total to 3-1 at the end of the second period.
Mike Embach got the third period scoring started almost seven minutes into the period when he scored on Carr with help from Mike Cazzola and Kyle Follmer. Cody Sol took a two-minute roughing penalty and a ten-minute game misconduct, leaving the Komets shorthanded for a time. Mason Baptista let the Nailers know that the Komets were not done yet when he scored with help from Colin Mulvey, thus tying the game. With 3:18 left in the period, things started getting a little testy between the teams. Follmer took a two-minute roughing penalty and Wheeling’s Kwas took a boarding penalty and his teammate Tyler Currier took a roughing penalty. With 1:22 left in regulation, Cheek continued his hot streak by scoring the game-winning goal with help from Shawn Szydlowski and Jason Binkley.
